In the year 2000, the Lake County Solid Waste Management District, Mayor Duane W. Dedelow Jr. of Hammond, and the Hammond Parks Department entered into a unique and prolific environmental educational partnership. The goal of the partnership was to establish the Hammond Environmental Education Center (HEEC) as a premier environmental education facility in the northern region of Lake County.

The focus is to offer unique programming to school districts and communities. The HEEC has set many goals and desired objectives to successfully implement effective source reduction and recycling programs, and they are as follows:

Goals:

  • To create a knowledgeable and enthusiastic community.
  • To encourage students to understand and forge connections with their immediate surroundings.
  • To promote the importance of solid waste source reduction, recycling, and composting.
  • To develop and provide programs that will allow students the opportunity to construct an understanding of the environment issues through hands-on, minds-on investigation.

  •
