Reuse...

Simply, reusing saves resources and money. Whenever possible, avoid products that are designed to be thrown away, such as paper and plastic dishes, disposable razors, lighters and disposable diapers. Use cloth napkins, rechargeable batteries, thermos bottles and other reuseables. Get an appliance repaired rather than tossing it to buy a new one. Resources are saved because the item doesn't have to be reprocessed like it would be if it were recycled. Reusing is better than recycling as no energy is expended.

Try to reuse these items that you might ordinarily throw away or recycle:

Meat Trays - Save and thoroughly wash polystyrene meat trays of the same size and use them instead of paper plates at picnics. If you are carrying flat food to the picnic (carrot sticks, cold cuts, etc.), pack them in a meat tray and invert a second tray over the first tray as a cover. Hold trays together with a rubber band. The trays are also useful for school craft projects.

Packing & Shipping Peanuts - Contact a local mailing and packaging company. Most will be happy to accept the peanuts. Phone numbers and companies are listed in the Yellow Pages under "Mail Box Rental and Receiving."

Books - Donations can be made to the Lake County Public Library, Circulation Department, 1919 W. 81st Avenue, Merrillville 219-769-3541

Furniture, Bicycles, Sports Equipment and generally "still usable" items - Call Amvets, 4729 West 135th, Blue Island, Illinois (219) 882-2050; Goodwill Industries, 114 State Street, Hammond, (219) 931-5230; or Salvation Army, 1351 West 11th Avenue, Gary, (219) 882-9377 for pick up services.

You may also want to look in the Yellow Pages under "Consignment Service." You may want to contact organizations in your area like schools, churches, YMCA, YWCA, senior citizen centers and social center agencies as they have needs for office equipment, books, audio/visual equipment, nursery items and more that are in working condition.
