Worms in the Classroom Application

The Lake County Solid Waste Management District will provide the worm bin, bedding, red wiggler worms, spray bottle, plastic trowel, and instructions. An educator will lead an Enviromobile program when the worms are delivered and picked up to teach students about composting, worms, and their care.

The program involves a three-month time commitment. Two options are available:
Fall: September 1 – November 30
Spring: February 1 – April 30

This is a limited program and is available on a first come, first served basis at the discretion of the education team.

Below are the commitments involved in this program:
· Have available floor space for the worm bin (2’x2’ is recommended).
· Feed the worms raw fruit and vegetable scraps 1-2 times per week. Bury the food under the bedding.
· Check the bedding moisture 1-2 times per week. If it is too wet, add bedding; if it is too dry, spray with water. Mix bedding.
· Turn bedding if mold begins to form on top.
· Monitor students when they are handling the worms to be sure they are treating them respectfully. Worms can be handled 1-2 times per week.
