CAP-A-THON Returns to Lake County

The Lake County Solid Waste Management District recently announced the return of CAP-A-THON, a community-driven recycling initiative that transforms plastic waste into long-lasting public amenities. After reopening the program for the first time in several years, the District is proud to share that registration for CAP-A-THON filled completely ahead of schedule, reflecting strong interest and enthusiasm from schools and organizations across Lake County.

CAP-A-THON empowers local groups to organize their own plastic cap collection drives, bringing together students, families, coworkers, and neighbors around a shared goal: keeping plastic out of landfills while creating something useful and tangible for their community. Participating groups collect eligible plastic caps, which are then recycled and remanufactured into durable benches or tables.

Since the program originally launched, CAP-A-THON has helped recycle over 100,000 pounds of plastic caps, resulting in recycled-plastic furniture now found in schools, parks, churches, municipal buildings, and along local trails throughout Lake County.

“These collections don’t just divert waste — they turn it into something the community can see and use every day,” said Karen Darnell, Environmental Education Manager at LCSWMD. “It’s a powerful way to connect environmental action with real-world results.”

This year’s participating organizations will spend the coming months running their own collection efforts within their communities, with guidance and logistical support provided by the District. Once collections are complete, the District coordinates recycling and transportation of the materials and covers the cost of delivering the finished benches and tables back to each group.

Beyond the environmental benefits, CAP-A-THON continues to serve as a hands-on educational experience, helping participants better understand plastic consumption, recycling systems, and the impact of collective action.

With all available spots filled, the 2026 CAP-A-THON program is officially underway — and the District looks forward to sharing progress updates and celebrating the finished benches and tables as they are placed throughout Lake County.

The Lake County Solid Waste Management District thanks all participating organizations for their commitment to sustainability and community collaboration, and is excited to see the positive impact CAP-A-THON will continue to make in the months ahead.
