The site navigation utilizes arrow, enter, escape, and space bar key commands. Left and right arrows move across top level links and expand / close menus in sub levels. Up and Down arrows will open main level menus and toggle through sub tier links. Enter and space open menus and escape closes them as well. Tab will move on to the next part of the site rather than go through menu items.

Please read the following information before applying for the Traveling Trout in the Classroom Tank for your school. You can visit www.troutintheclassroom.org for an overview of the nationwide program. The Lake County Solid Waste Management District will provide the tank, the tank set up, supplies, trout eggs and troubleshooting along with a few visits to the classroom for hands-on programming throughout the school year, while the students “raise” the fish from egg to fry and perform weekly water testing. TIC is a daily, year-long commitment (including over weekends and long breaks). There is flexibility in this program to make it work for your students but housing the tank and fish is a commitment. Typically, the tank is set-up in October and then the tank cycles (to let the good bacteria grow) for 2 weeks up to 1 month. Eggs are delivered in early November and hatch in 1-2 weeks. In May, young fish are transported back to live in the stream at our Environmental Education Center in Hammond. The classroom tank is torn down at the end of May or early June.
