The LCSWMD offers 2 different summer opportunities, Day Camps at the EEC or the Enviromobile at your location.

Day Camps at the EEC
Join the educators at Lake County Solid Waste Management District for a free, fun experience this summer. Participants are encouraged to bring a snack to their scheduled program, as no food is provided. Programs listed below are “drop-off” programs, adults are not expected to attend. Prompt drop-offs and pick-ups are appreciated. Grade levels listed are for the 2024-2025 school year.
Programs at the Environmental Education Center
- Bowling Bonanza - June 6 (10am - 12pm)
- 1st- 5th grade
- Learn how to make your own fun! Participants will make their own bowling set to take home and compete in our ReUz Bowling Tournament!
- Compost Exploration - June 12 (1pm - 3 pm)
- 1st– 7th grade
- 6/12/24, 1pm-3pm
- Dig into the topic of natural decomposition with our composting program! Learn how to create your own compost and investigate how our red wiggler friends (worms) help to break down organic materials.
- Edible Landfill *Allergen Warning* - June 18 (1pm - 3pm)
- 1st-7th grade
- Do you know how a landfill is constructed? Learn about the important design and construction of a landfill by making your own edible version! Discover how to reduce your waste production while snacking on the tasty layers of your creation. Program uses foods containing common allergens.
- Art Camp Jr - June 26 & June 27 (10am - 12pm)
- 1st- 4th grade
- Do you have a 1st-4th grader who loves to create their own art? We have just the program for you! Join us for a two-day art camp where participants will repurpose common materials to create new masterpieces. Camp will conclude with an “Art Show” for families exhibiting student work.
- Art Camp - June 26 & June 27 (1pm - 4 pm)
- 5th- 8th grade
- Do you have a 5th-8th grader who loves to create their own art? We have just the program for you! Join us for a two-day art camp where participants will repurpose common materials to create new masterpieces. Camp will conclude with an “Art Show” for families exhibiting student work.
- Paper Crafting - July 9 & July 10 (1pm - 4pm)
- 3rd- 8th grade
- Participants will start the program making their very own recycled paper, followed by paper crafting. This is a two-day event to allow for adequate drying and crafting time; participants should plan to attend both days
- Carter Creek Mystery: An Environmental Disaster - July 18 (1pm - 4pm)
- 4th – 8th grade
- Attention aspiring forensic investigators: Carterville Creek is polluted! You must learn the nature of the contamination, locate its source, and find the culprit responsible, using forensic science to test water and soil samples.
- Cleaner Possibilities: Oil Spill Aftermath - July 23 (1pm - 4pm)
- 3rd- 8th grade
- There’s been a spill! In this mock-oil spill activity, participants will perform hands-on activities to learn about the environmental impact of an oil spill as well as the methods utilized to clean it up. What can we do? Solar powered kits will be used to explore greener fuel solutions.
- Recycling Carnival - July 31 (1pm - 3 pm)
- 1st – 5th grade
- Join us for this open-house style end of summer celebration at the Recycling Carnival! Participants are invited to play a variety of carnival games created using repurposed materials! Open to all summer 2024 program participants and their families.
Summer Enviromoble
The Enviromobile is on the move over the summer bringing fun, free programming to your organization! A variety of topics for all age levels are available. Contact our education team by submitting a request below. We will be in touch soon to discuss options
